  • Almost done with military service!

Greetings to fellow SQTalkers from Seoul!

As many of you know, I have been serving in the Korean army for the last 21 months to fulfill national service, and I'm now down to the final month. Time just flew past at an amazing rate - it seems like only yesterday that I flew back from LHR, but that was September 2009!

Despite my worries, it has been a great experience overall. (No, before you ask, I'm not about to enlist for a longer term!) I met some great new people, learned about the workings of Korean culture/society and generally had a good learning experience as well. It'd be a lie to say that it was always pleasant - the first few months were probably one of the most difficult periods of my life so far - but once I adjusted to it all, I am glad to be able to say that I had a great time.

Although I did have a few leaves in between (and even met up with a certain SQTalker who lurks in the shadows, during his visit to Seoul) I wanted to wait until around now so that I'm in the right frame of mind to go back into 'normal life', as it were. So, if you were wondering about my whereabouts, you have the answer, and apologies for the radio silence until now.

I'm planning a trip back to London for mid-August and hope to be able to catch up with as many of you as possible along the way And also plan to do one of those 20k-words-plus TRs that I used to love doing, so you can look forward to that.

Hope everyone is well, and happy travels!

stargold, a blast from the past - glad to hear you're doing good! Nice photos too on FB.

Apart from a sudden interest in trips to see Mount Everest, I don't think you've missed anything major in the past 21 months (at least not on the alliances I care about). Exciting times though (e.g. MH considering their past history) and hoping for more trips to unusual places!

I'm still faithful to who I picked up (you know who I mean - you played with her as well!) but she's now lightly soiled and I'm interested to see what younger model may come along.

When in London, you must try this tiny sushi place - I've been many times now and still love it.

              Hope to catch up soon!

Still haven't another monster lobster since yours.
F all the way. Settle for J. Usually whY. Sigh.

I meant to reply earlier, but it wasn't possible to post replies whilst on base - I'm out on a 1-night holiday tonight, and then a final holiday from 25th to 30th June, then finished!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! I missed the flying, SQTalk and my SQTalker friends all these days

Kyo: My god, you mean to tell me the never-ending TR is about to get finished? I have a never-ending TR of my own - need to get round to writing up the OZ flight from back in 2009

HUGE AL: Shame I've missed you on your trips to Seoul so far - let me know when you're next here and hopefully I'll be here too - although you probably know better places to eat/drink than someone who has been stuck in the army for the last 2 years!

jhm: Good to know that not much has changed I know that there's probably plenty of life left yet in your old faithful acquisition from back in 2009, but if you're thinking of moving onto something newer and better, I may well be willing to take it off your hands... need something to put me back into the hobby! As for the sushi place - definitely, I'll give it a try when I'm in London.

Still pondering over the flight options to get me from ICN to LHR... so many choices!

Ouch ... well, I hope you enjoy tonight and then good luck for the final 11-months until freedom!

Good to see you back on here mate!. I didn't realise national service in Korea was so long.

That's a no brainer, ICN-FRA in OZ F. Or if that's not possible then LX F from wherever.

Nothing much has changed on that front I'm afraid.

                            StarGold,

Would be lovely to see you back in London. We'd go to the sushi place together. jhm is now really good friends with the chef and his wife.

His acquisition... I bet the shutter has been pressed less than 200 times. My new camera on the other hand (not the Nikon, the Canon!!!) has been very well used since I got it in October.

Marco Polo is not a 'her'. The D700 is a 'he'. Not sure if you've seen the Nikon ads in Korea.

                              jhm: Oops...

MAN Flyer: Yup, it does last quite a long period of time, doesn't it? But then, it only illustrates just how quickly time passes...

As for the flight recommendation, having flown an amazing flight on LX F before, I'm definitely in agreement! However, the dates that LX F is available right now is not ideal... I'm contemplating LH F on a daytime HKG-FRA but I'm not sure whether I will end up kicking myself.

phaleesy: Hahaha, yes I did see the Nikon ads in Korea

It's quite amusing how fates of cameras differ depending on whether they go to you or jhm - beaten up in no time, or pristine like the day it was bought
