  • Will Changi ever become LKY ?.

Does anyone think after the great man has gone there will be calls to rename Changi, and for the code to change from SIN to LKY .

I had just such a discussion with a Singaporean friend a while ago who said he (LKY) wouldn't approve of the suggestion.

I certainly hope not. Changi is a brand! It is world famous. How could anyone think of renaming the airport?!

LKY is a great man but I would think that it was Goh Keng Swee who was doing a lot of the work behind the scenes.

I hope not as well. However, I don't think IATA code will change even if Changi is renamed.

IATA codes are rarely changed which leaves some airports with codes derived from old city names. Some examples, Beijing Capital (PEK), Mumbai (BOM), Chennai (MAA), Ronald Reagan National (DCA), John Wayne (SNA), Gerald Ford (GRR), George Bush (IAH). I can only think of one airport which changed IATA code after renaming JFK (JFK) from Idelwild (IDL). NYC is used as a IATA city code to cover all three New York City airports. I doubt JFK airport would have changed its IATA code to JFK if it were the only airport in NYC.

          What makes you think that?

LKY did talk about his vision for Changi airport in the 70s well before Changi was built, but then again quite a fair bit of what we see in Sg steemed from his vision (and of course, many of the early top government leaders as well eg David Marshall, Goh Keng Swee etc)

It would be scary if everything here gets renamed after him lol- highly doubt that would happen.

I wouldn't agree with that. When people get old, disease sets in and they don't think / speak / reply with common sense.

I dont care so much for airport code, SIN / WSSS.... as long as it stays as Changi Airport.

I don't think we have to worry about a cult of personality on his part. SIN will remain Changi.

Haha, I personally find his recent comments grossly inappropriate.

Yes, I still remember the speech where he said "Singapore is not a nation" last year

God must have been a ship owner, he placed the raw materials far from where they are needed and covered two-thirds of the earth with water...

Don't think it matters where you are physically. You will always be living in SIN, if you hold a SIN passport or PR.
