i bought mine off yodobashi japan. really necessary when travelling to Japan, but completely useless in Seoul (being more advanced in terms of internet).
Mine has access code and password provided at the back of the device. the device requires power from USB. So I have to use either the laptop itself (well not so much wireless isn't it?) or iphone charger.

I've used my MacBook as a Wifi Hotspot in hotel rooms for multiple devices

    I've used this one forever:

    http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-WGR101.../dp/B0002CWPV8

Ancient, but it does the job. Minus is it heats up so much that I jam it in the fridge for 30 minutes before I depart the hotel.

Many people I know are now using:

    http://www.amazon.com/ZyXEL-Wireless...=travel+router

with much success. At least it's N!

I use one of these - got it for S$35 or thereabouts at some IT show. Switch to Access Point mode, plug in the ethernet cable, and your wireless network is all set up, with laptop/tablet/mobile being able to access over wifi. The hotel login page comes up with the first device you use to access.

Turning in-room cabled Internet into wifi?

Has anyone had any experience with travel/portable routers? The hotel I've booked only offers free cabled Internet (which is useless for tablets and phones).

I've read that these routers can turn the connection into wifi. Was wondering how to set it up or is it really as straightforward as plug-and-play? Doesn't one need to "log-in" using the hotel webpage first?

Any input will be greatly appreciated!
