Well, saying 'Xao' (pronounced 'Zow') or Xao qua (Zow wa) is accusing them of lying rather than calling them a liar, at least thats the way I was told. I can't speak Vietnamese (it's a bloody difficult language) but I have picked up a few bits over the last 8/9 years.

I am sure sabian is correct with his translation of liar.

That's exactly the same justification I'd give from Suvarnabhumi into BKK too. Hotel transfer are a hundred bucks equivalent... when it should be more like $5. (/end off-topicness)

Pointless expense for such a short journey. When I got here at the weekend the kiosks were advertising taxis to District 1 for US$ 8 instead of the usual US$ 15 they liked to try and get last ime I was here.

Still had the usual fun and games both on arrival in Haiphong and when I got back from to Saigon last night. Calling them a liar in Vietnamese usually makes them realise you are not a first time visitor who will fall for their bullsh*t.

Make sure you have 100,000 Dong, it's more than sufficient to get to most places. Which hotel are you staying at?

Go out the airport, turn left... walk all the way left... taxi rank, jump into a taxi (tell the guy to get you a taxi if you're a bit nervous), tell the driver "USE METER" (then point at the meter)...

    They will say OK. Done.
You may have to tell them several times to use the meter sometimes they will try to tell you that it will be the same fare either way, dont listen, insist on the meter being used!

Never had any issues with taxis in HCMC. As you come out of the airport, turn to the left and there is a taxi rank there. The cost of a taxi to District 1 with the luggage and airport surcharge would be less than 100,000 dong.
