BEIJING, Jan 24 (Reuters) - A Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 made a successful emergency landing at Beijing airport on Wednesday after an engine caught fire, Xinhua news agency said.

"Both the aircraft and the passengers are safe," Xinhua said, quoting Chinese civil aviation authorities. It did not give details.

The aircraft, bound for Singapore, took off from Beijing at 0045 GMT, a spokeswoman for the airline's Beijing office told Reuters by telephone. She said she did not know of any fire.

"We were informed that the aircraft had suffered some technical malfunction and had to return to the airport," the spokeswoman, surnamed Ma, said.

I hope no one from this forum was on the flight and had to endure the experience.

Indeed. Diversions are always a nuisance.

its one of the older 772s being delivered in 1999. Whats interesting is from the press it says the aircraft was airborne for 2 hrs before returning to land in Beijing. If it had occurred sometime after take-off, it should land at the nearest airport which have a SQ station ie in Guangzhou or even HKG instead of returning back to Beijing where it took off from - unless of course it just crcled for 2 hrs to burn off excess fuel? Its likely as they say a false alarm or a power surge/compressor stall.

You're right. If it was already two hours into the flight, HKG probably would have been a better diversion point than a return to PEK.
