Restrictions on commercial air traffic between Singapore and neighbouring Malaysia could end as early as June, according to Tony Fernandes, head of Malaysia's AirAsia, the region’s largest low-cost carrier. A bilateral agreement presently prevents most competition to the countries’ national carriers, ensuring an effective duopoly and high fares. Allowing AirAsia and other low-cost carriers to ply this route would revolutionise the 45-minute flight. Fares now start at about S$300, but AirAsia reckons it could charge one-sixth that. “It's long overdue,” said Mr Fernandes. “We think this market, just for AirAsia, could do about 22 flights a day.”
