Siem Reap hotel?

When I went 5+ years ago, I sorted it out after arrival. I had intended to go to a hotel (found from a guidebook) but the taxi driver at the airport suggested an alternative - no obligation; he took me there to take a look and it was fine. He also ended up being my driver for the two days, i.e. a fixed price for the whole day from early in the morning to the evening (after dinner). I assume that all of the other taxi drivers do the same.

I just had a quick look at Wotif.com and saw pretty good rates currently available. Raffles Grand d'Angkor @ $135, Le Meridien @ $117.
I've stayed at Shinta Mani ($100), the sister property of Hotel de la Paix, and and found it very good for the price.

It was about 4 years a go I was there. I stayed at the Sofitel (iirc) which was very nice. Like JHM the taxi I took from the airport offered to drive me around the temples the next day. Although mine tour finished earlier as it absolutely chucked it down with rain the day I was there so by about mid afternoon I had had enough (athough it did mean I had the place virtually to myself).

Tailor-made trips up to the temples are arranged; with your own guide in an hotel tuk-tuk.
My recommendation: The Pansea. I just loved the hotel. One of my all time favorites. Back in 2002, the walk up rate was $350. I called my TA in BKK and he got me the same suite for $110 including taxes and breakfast. AWESOME!
Here's the best link I found:

One note: the pool water either does not have a lot of chlorine or has none at all as there's algae growing in there.
Oops, I just figured out it's now called Residence d'Angkor:

Hi
I just stayed at Le Meridien Angkor and that was very nice. Hotel is very new and the service was great. The only "problem" is that you have to use a tuk-tuk to get into town but it was only 2$ so it was not a huge problem :-) Have you been to Siem Reap before? I'm working on my Siem reap trip report so keep an eye on my homepage for the report in a few weeks time :-)
