Impossible to upgrade on SQ861/SQ862

I tried to upgrade on either leg for my incoming trip back to SG, but, the agent said that SQ didn't even have waitlist for these 2 flights

It seems that the only way to experience the new Business/First is by forking out cash for it !!!

That is correct - all I and O class has been blocked out on existing 77W service. You can only book non-saver unrestricted awards. From feb 1 you can also redeem non-saver unrestricted upgrades - which go into A and D, which IMHO, are not worth it.
