Some common sense at last coming out of Singapore, but they can't bring themselves to scrap it completely, yet.
SINGAPORE: A special levy imposed on hotels during the Singapore Formula One (F1) season will be cut this year due to the current economic downturn.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said on Friday the levy will be in place for four days this year, from September 24 to 27.
Last year, during the inaugural race, the levy was in place for five days.
However, the quantum of the tax will remain unchanged.
Trackside hotels have to pay a 30 per cent levy on their total revenues from rooms, while other hotels have to fork out 20 per cent.
STB said it made the decision to grant a one-night concession following consultations with the Singapore Hotel Association.
It added that last year's night race attracted more than 40,000 overseas visitors and generated S$168 million in tourism receipts.
