  • Hotel Recommendation in Melbourne

I will be heading to Melbourne in about 2 weeks time and will like to check if there are any recommendation on a decent hotel for business travel purpose. Very important for the hotel room to have a decent broadband connection.

    Thanks.

Try the Crown Casino or Crown Promenade hotels, the Westin, the Langham, the Grand Hyatt, the Park Hyatt , or if you don't mind a wee bit further out, the Hilton in East Melbourne. All very good IMHO.

      Welcome to Melbourne.

Perhaps it'd help narrow it down if you tell us where you need to be. Having said that this is a v walkable city with trams aplenty so it is quite easy to get anywhere within the CBD, allow a bit more time if venturing away from the city. Moot point if you're hiring a car of course.

I beg to differ slightly with my esteemed friend above, the Hilton Melbourne isn't really in the same league as the other hotels mentioned by SQFG and is more towards the lower end of 4 stars whereas the rest are pretty high end 5 star hotels. It is looking a bit tired these days. Might have decent rates though, but for similar rates you can stay at the Crowne Plaza which has a more central location and is IMO a fair bit nicer. Hilton is near(ish) some cheap shopping on Bridge Rd but I note that you're here on business.

Westin and Grand Hyatt have v central locations, smack in the middle of the city. Both are on Collins St. Be aware though that there are renovations going on at the Grand Hyatt which might or might not be completed when you get here.

Crown Casino, Crown Promenade hotels and Langham: all on Southbank, just south of the city, across the river from the business district. The Langham might be convenient if your office is around the St Kilda Rd office precinct.

Park Hyatt is also on the edge of the city, near Parliament House on the Eastern end of the CBD. Besides the Westin, this one is my favourite in terms of decor. If you stay at this property and love your coffee, do walk over to The European on Spring St for some AMAZING coffee. (sorry can't find the espresso smiley )

I'd also recommend The Lindrum if you want something boutique, it is located on Spring St and is on the eastern tip of the city.

I believe they'd all have v good broadband. Can certainly specifically confirm per experience that this is the case for Westin, GH, PH, Hilton, the Lindrum and the CP. Haven't heard any complaints to the contrary about the other properties either.

Thanks. Since I won't really be in the hotel all the time, I am thinking whether to try apartments since they seem to be pretty common in Melbourne and affordable. I saw Somerset Gordon Heights going at AU$135 and thought it is quite a steal. Is that location good?

That's around the Chinatown area in the city, so pretty central. Not sure of the actual property itself as neither myself nor anyone I know have stayed there, but it looks nice from the pictures and Somerset is a pretty reputable operator.

Friends have stayed at Quest Apartments, on Flinders Lane and Williams St. Both are central, with the Williams St one in close proximity to offices and the legal precinct (but otherwise not much going on in the area). One is supposedly better than the other but I can't remember which or why... FWIW I have stayed at their properties in Sydney and Christchurch when traveling to conferences and have had most satisfactory stays each time.

            Howdy,
I stayed at the Somerset @ Elizabeth in January.
Good location near Chinatown, surrounded by shopping malls. A supermarket is 5 mins walk away.
Nice cosy apartment with decent facilities if you want to do some cooking.

I've stayed at Somerset @ Elizabeth too - very good location.
But my unit faced Elizabeth St which is very busy, and I found it too noisy, so take note of that.

I chanced by this hotel called Citigate. Seems from reviews that it is pretty decent and they have a website at http://www.mirvachotels.com/citigate-melbourne.

How is the location of this? The reviews are so so.

It is reasonably central, but I don't like that area at night. If you get a room overlooking Flinders St it can be noisy unless they've got good soundproofing. Also there is just something about that bit of town and parts of Elizabeth St at night that I do not feel comfortable with, a bit gritty if you get what I mean. In the day it can also get manic due to being opposite Flinders St station.

It is however in close proximity to Degraves St - an entire laneway of quality coffeeshops and reasonably priced eateries. A nice oasis of calm in the midst of the bustle. Also a v nice wine bar, Deanery in another laneway just around the corner which is popular for after work drinks.

Sofitel would also be a good choice, right on Collins Street.

Medina on Flinders St might suit:
                        http://www.medina.com.au/default.asp...treet/location

It's situated at the nicer bit of Flinders St, and reasonably central.

There's also another one on Queens St but I personally prefer the other location, though again with noise concerns as a caveat.

The medina on Queen St is pretty good actually. At night, noise not an issue - pretty dead end of town and no bars really around to cause noise, just the bar called IF at the Medina itself. Used to work across the road from it and can assure, after 7pm - pretty quiet.

Just a three minute walk to Chinatown where you are ensured of a quality feed - try the Supper Inn - looks crappy but the lines of people to get in tell you how good the food is.
