Malaysia's airports to introduce security fees for travelers

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Malaysia's airports will start collecting a fee from passengers next month to cover increased security costs, the country's airports operator said Thursday.

Travelers will pay an extra 3 ringgit (US$0.84; €0.64) per person for domestic flights and 6 ringgit (US$1.68; €1.28) for international destinations on tickets issued beginning Jan. 15, Malaysia Airports said.

"Many airports around the world began to levy the security charge immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, (terrorist attacks in the U.S.)," it said in a statement. "However, for Malaysia, the additional cost of these enhanced security measures has so far been absorbed by the airport operator."

The charge will be collected by airlines as part of the ticket price, the statement said, adding that the fee was lower than those imposed at many airports in other countries.
