  • A few quick thoughts from Leroy and Bubba on SA Domestic JNB-CPT-JNB in Y

    Hello SQTalk

After getting off the golden kite plane mummy bundled us off onto a SA domestic plane from JNB-CPT. The walk across from International to Domestic is a 5 minute trek, and is a covered walkway, so quite easy to do. Lots of people will however, offer to carry your luggage for you. Just decline politely if you don't want that service.

The domestic terminal is also quite pleasant -- and the *A lounge is also quite nice, as mummy reported here.

We did not get priority luggage tags though, as mummy forgot to ask for them. We were also not allowed to stand by for an earlier flight as our ticket was a cheapie V class one. We did however, get a window and center as requested, even though we're not supposed to be able to assign seats.

Springbok Land. Here's sistership ZS-SJS at the gate. We were on 737-800 ZS-SJN.

Cabin view in Y. 3-3 across. Seat pitch is not fantastic though.

As we pushed back, we could see some interesting aircraft:

    A DC-8!

Take off was fairly brisk after a short taxi...

This is what we came here for! Mummy says the small dots at the bottom are roving herds of elephants, or something.

A short way down, we saw this!

Mummy says it's the remnant of an alien spaceship but as you can see, we think it's clearly just an architect having a bad day. Anyone know what it is?

There were lots of interesting geograpical features throughout the ride

Look at this! Mummy said a meteorite the size of Texas came through here last week, and gouged this out. Thankfully, she said nobody died in the incident.

      Back to the service:

You get a small snack in a snack box.

Comes with a tuna or vegetarian sandwich:

      A little biscuit

And a drink of your choice

      In this case.....

Soon enough it was time to land:

        We saw this pretty mountain.

It looks just like a table. So we've decided to officially name it "Table Mountain". If anyone objects to our choice of name, kindly complain to mummy.

Here we are! and look who's here too:- Aunty 9M-MPM who brought us over from KUL to JNB. Just about to pushback and make her way across the southern atlantic to Buenos Aires.

        Here's our ride: Rudolph the 737-800 ZS-SJN

Overall - we were a little disappointed with the service on the 2 hour 10 minute flight. There were many staff in uniform (we think about 30 or so) and they seemed more interested in chatting with each other.

They also preboarded much much earlier than the other pax, and when mummy, aunty P and us boarded (we were early preboarders) - the overhead bins had already been filled, so had to do a lot of juggling around.

Seat pitch is a little tight, and although there are nicer seats up in the front of the Y cabin, the check-in agent said it was for only SA Voyager elite, not for *A elite. So up the rear it was for us!

Hope you enjoyed the short report

Brings back great memories of my holiday in Cape Town in 2006. Have a great stay in Kapstaad (Cape Town). If you get the chance, the ride to the top of table mountain is fantastic.

30 staff on the plane? That seems like a lot for such a short flight

Would have thought the service would be very personalised with that ratio of staff to passengers

Those 30 staff referred to were paxing in uniform - so technically not part of the crew I guess.

OLCI'ed yesterday for the return journey at T-24 on the dot - and managed to snag 11A, first row of Y on the left, which actually has J seating - so should be a much more comfy ride I hope

Much better legroon in 11A, first row of Y with quasi J seats (which we got on SA322 going CPT-JNB)

Same snackbox on the outside again, but a beef sandwich instead this time.

Only SA can turn a safety card into a kinky exercise

That concludes the TR on SA317 and SA322. (one alphabet different on both flight numbers and we'd have all been on A380's sigh )
