  • Soak01 Visits Hobart, Tasmania on DJ

To celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary, Mrs soak01 and I thought we'd take advantage of some cheap Virgin Blue airfares and head off to Hobart in Tasmania for the weekend. Managed to get tickets for $89 AUD each way.

Used the Virgin Blue online check-in (available 24hrs before departure) and found that we had been allocated seats 8A and 8B, therefore no need to change seats although the option was available. Out of curiosity I had a look to see what was available. Only seats towards the rear of the plane showing as available. Didn't bother me though as Mrs soak01 prefers to sit towards the front on these smaller aircraft.

On arrival at ADL airport no waiting at the Virgin Blue bag drop desk and were offerred emergency exit row seat (Seat 12E & F) in place of allocation. These are classed as "Blue Zone" seats which you normally have to pay $30 extra per flight due to the extra leg room, so we were happy to change seats.

DJ uses the thermal paper type boarding pass.

Quickly through Secuity Control and whilst Mrs soak01 decided to check out some of the shopping outlets I had a wander around and look who I found:

SQ268 being operated by 9V-SRQ preparing for its return flight to Singapore.

Always a sucker for the golden goose. Anyway after dragging Mrs soak01 from the shops we headed to Gate 14.

Our aircraft had arrived from Melbourne and was being prepared for our flight to Hobart

    Airline: Virgin Blue DJ698
    A/C: Boeing 737-700 (with live 2 air)
    Name: Sassy Sydney
    Reg: VH-VBD
    STD: 1340
    STA: 1555
    Seat: Economy Seat 12E & F

The majority of the DJ fleet (except Embraaer and Pacific Blue Aircraft) are now fitted with seat back satellite live tv and is available for $4.90 on flights of up to 2 hours and $9.90 for flights over 2 hours. It provides 24 live tv channels including news, sport, movies. The flight tracking channel is also available free of charge. You can tell that this aircraft is fitted with "live 2 air" by the hump on the top of the fuselage.

Now for the obligatory feet shot.

Certainly one of teh rows to go for if you can get it (or by paying the extra $30) as the seats in front do not recline with it being an emergency exit.

After leaving Adelaide on time and 32C temperature , flight was very smooth accept for final approach due to head wind and pouring rain. Flying time to Hobart was 1hr 40 minutes and stepped off the plane via the stairs (no aerobridges on Hobart) to a cold and wet 12C. Bags quickly brought to the terminal and we were on our way to Hobart CBD within 20minutes.

    Soak01 in Hobart

The trip by Airport bus took only about 30 minutes (with a few stops on the way) and for a flat fare of $12.00 per adult provides a airport to hotel service. We had reserved an apartment at the Zero Davey Apartments with a view of Constitution Dock.

After unpacking took a quick walk around Constitution Dock and the surrounds.

      Soak01 In Hobart - Day 2

Next morning explored the dockside and CBD a bit further before heading off to 'AlpenRail' which is one of the largest model railways in Australia, and Wrest Point Casino (Australia's first Casino).

View Of Hobart From Wrest Point Casino - Tried my luck on the tables but no good. Mrs Soak01 won on the pokies though.

          Soak01 in Hobart - Day 3

Next morning awaoke to find this sight:

She is the Sapphire Princess which had berthed at Hobart for the day. With it being Saturday, Hobart was alive with people attending the Salamanca Markets which run from 8.00am to 3.00pm so the passengers from the cruise ship added to the experience.

So you can guess what I did for the rest of the day with a shopoholic Mrs soak01.

Soak01 In Hobart - Time To Return Home To ADL

            Well it was tiem to leave after 3 fabulous days in Hobart. As usual, ate too much and drank too much. Suggestions to anyone wanting to visit;

            (1) Stay as close as you can to Constitution Dock as it has easy access to the CBD, Restaurants and the Market

            (2) Highly recommend the following restaurants; The Drunken Admiral (Seafood), The Ball & Chain (Steak), Timeless Way (Breakfast and Light Meals)

            (3) Must have a drink or two or three.....(you get the idea where we spent a lot of time) at the IXL Long Bar which is part of the Henry James Hotel Complex.

Again used an Internet Cafe to check-in online and was allocated seats 8E & F, again no reason to change.

Arrived at Hobart International Airport only to find that the incoming flight from Sydney was delayed, anyway took advantage to take some pictures. By the way, although the airport is called Hobart International Airport, the only International flights are the weekly government A320 flights to Antarctica (carrying scientists etc), where the plane actually lands on an ice runway......could be interesting. There is talk that Air NZ may re-instate flights to AKL but there is nothing definite at this stage.

            DJ367 Hobart To Melbourne

Qantas preparing to operate QF1020 to Sydney

With Qantas and Jetstar using the Gate we had a traffic jam for a couple of minutes due to the late departure of QF1020

With QF1020 having left the gate the Jetstar A320 from Melbourne could deplane

Our aircraft finally arrives from Sydney (running about 10 minutes late) and promptly is made ready for the onward flight to Adelaide

Looks like it was a great trip - I'm glad you had a good anniversary.

That apartment hotel in Hobart looks very nice. I shall keep it in mind should I ever visit the place, since there's a distinct lack of chain hotels there.

                  Homeward Bound

                  Airline: Virgin Blue DJ697
                  A/C: Boeing 737-800 (with live 2 air)
                  Name: Prue Blue
                  Reg: VH-VUE
                  STD: 1115
                  STA: 1245
                  Seat: Economy Seat 8E & F

Boarding was prompt through both the front and rear stairs. Again the obligatory feet photo. A lot less leg room than the exit row seat.

As part of the welcoming aboard speech was advised that Live 2 Air was not functioning. Departure was quick and we headed due north west over central Tasmania towards Bass Strait.

South East South Australia - Nearly There!

Flight plan took us over the southern Adelaide suburbs and out into the Spencer Gulf before banking right to line up for landing

                  Final Approach

                  Taxiing To The Gate

Luggage was on the carousel within 10 minutes of leaving the plane. Would certainly recommend a trip to Hobart if anyone is intending to visit Australia and Virgin Blue were great.

KeithMel, we both enjoyed the apartment although Mrs soak01 has said that for an extra $100 night she would love to stay at The Henry James next time. (I'll have to keep an eye out for another DJ flight special). The Zero Davey is a modern straight forward apartment style accomodation. Some rooms have spas and all have plasma tv's and internet facilities. However, the Henry James is more of a boutique hotel with all associated facilities. As I said we couldn't fault the service at the IXL Long Bar, and great prices.

Great report. I just read it after it popped to the top of the list. I especially like the photo with the Alfa Romeo - looks like a Berlina - heading through rush hour, being the owner of a 1973 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Veloce owned since new; speaking of being old.
