  • KUL-LHR (Op-up J) on MH2

As posted in MalaysianWings. Here's a TR to share with you guys!

    ----------------

This is my first MH flight in about 1.5 years. I have been flying SQ ever since my drama with Enrich began. I was supposed to fly back to LHR on SQ (had it booked) but had to cancel the ticket due unavailability of seats on 17th Feb. So I decided to get on MH since I have about 28,000 Enrich miles and would need about 2000 Enrich miles to upgrade one way (for my return).

I booked my tickets via the new MH booking engine. I haven't done this before but I must say even though it's not as refined as SQ's booking engine, it was quite swift getting from selecting my flight all the way to the payment section. A few clicks and ta-da, got my e-ticket confirmed. Only complain is that they do not accept American Express. Oh well.

I then logged into my Enrich account and surprised to find that I'm still a Silver member. Found it really strange as I haven't flown with them for ages. Anyway I wasn't complaining as being a Silver member I was entitled to check-in at the Business class lane, as well as getting 25% Enrich miles on miles flown. Oh and extra 5kg (I weighed in at 28kg! Phew...)

I went to gate C37 at about 11.45pm...was probably the last person to board. Then after having seated, the FA approached me, and told me that I was given an upgrade to J class. I was like...'Seriously??'. Shocked beyond words!! After flying so many times on SQ, I was not given any (probably it was always fully booked, that's y), but after returning to MH, this is what I got?! I was a happy bunny...I was then escorted to 17A...YAY!!!

Gob smacked, I then immediately decided to re-evaluate my relationship with SQ... LOL.

    To be continued...

finally got time to sort the pics out. Now, the best satay in the world is served...in the air!

These are the best satay I have had...seriously...the chicken is so chunky and juicy that after 5 sticks I felt like have had 15 sticks...the MH stewardess came and offered me more...but I was really really full by then, and this is just the appetizer! I politely decline the offer, though I wish I had room for more.

    MAS = Mesti Ada Satay!

Starter Hot Salmon Pepper, complemented with Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing
The salmon was very tasty - quite chunky and I must say it's damn yummy. The lemon however, looked dehydrated! Also felt the tray was a little bit tiny, definitely need more room for better dining lor...

Main Course of Pan-Fried Seabass, topped with sauteed sliced mushroom and tarragon demi-glaze, served with roasted sweet potato, pumpkin and chinese vegetable

The portion doesn't look big which is great - remember this is supposed to be supper, and after those sticks of huge satays, I thought the portion was just nice. Very tasty seabass, but not a big fan of the roasted pumpkins.

        A mug of coffee

I was surprised that they serve coffee in a mug. It kinda felt very homely, kinda like what your mom would serve. Nice mug tho...wanna take home one leh!

After the meal, I was so stuffed that I decided to call it a night...time to activate the flat-bed! I slept most of the flight...woke up in between to go for toilet break and just to hydrate myself. Here's a shot of the cabin's ambiance lighting

and the flatbed, sorry...didn't use flash or anything so to not disturb other passengers...

Oh ya, the load of business was very high, 37 out of 39 J seats were occupied. There were about 7 pax in the F class. Y class was equally packed, but not to the brim. Some still manage to get 2 seats.

SELECT IFE...I quite like the layout and the fonts use, in general they are quite modern. Didn't watch any movies or anything though...slept the whole way through..

          Breakfast time!

Sorry for the quality, my battery ran flat so I used my mobile..

          table being set

          Presentation a bit out lar...

Oh how DELICIOUS this is! Nasi lemak just before touchdown! Prawns were huge...but again, presentation was a huge let down

Coming from a Malaysian who has hundreds of choices of satay, 24/7/365 - I'll tell you, MH's onboard satay is VERY good. IMHO, one of the best I've ever tasted.

Really ? The last time I was in KL, I seem to remember sitting in a car driving around KL for a long time before we could find some satay at that time of night ?

I assume you mean one of the best you've ever tasted - full stop - rather than one of the best you've ever tasted on a plane. Very high praise indeed!

Unlike SQ, I see that MH serve theirs the proper (?) way with rice cubes.

Is the nasi lemak meant to look like that ? For example, what's the watery red liquid near the bottom ?

                      Discombobulation at the time....

The rice cubes are called ketupat.

No. Pure nasi lemak is typically the rice itself, a slice or two of cucumbers, some fried peanuts, fried anchovies, a hard boiled egg (typically 1/2 of one anyway) and the sambal paste(anchovies in a chili paste, and is quite viscous - unlike the watery stuff seen in the pic)

There are variations though: MH's sambal (as in this picture) has prawns in it. Also, there is some chicken, so it's a bit more upmarket than the 15p one I'd buy at the warong down the road.

Malay 101 ? So what's the difference between ketupat (the rice dumpling I see from Google) and nasi himpit (what MH say on the menu) ?

That (or discombobulated, rather) is one of my favoritest words of all time.

Does Malaysian use the word ketupat? I always thought Malaysians calls it nasi himpit, while Indonesians calls it ketupat, no?

                              Malaysians use both... see below

Ketupat - rice boiled in a coconut leaf

Nasi Himpit - rice boiled in a plastic bag (current practise)

                              Slightly different in taste.
