  • Leroy and Bubba's trip report on the first A380 flight of 2008 (SQ220 in J - w/video)

    SQ220 New Year's day
    SYD-SIN
    9V-SKA

    Hello SQTalk!
    Happy new year!

This is the last report from our trip with Mummy and aunty P that included:

Our ride down to SYD on the A380
A ride to CHC and back on NZ
A ride aboard DJ and QF

    and a helicopter joyride

After a lovely night out watching fireworks, mummy bundled us off to bed rather late. We all got up at 5.15am so that we could be bright and early at Kingsford Smith.

At check in, mummy bumped into an old friend of hers who still works for SQ, Aunty Hayam. She was lovely and told mummy a little bit about the operations they face daily trying to get SQ221 in and SQ220 away on time.

Today's load was 399 in Y, 54 in J and 2 in R. They were oversold in Y and were asking for volunteers to take SQ232 at 1245 (some 3 hours 55 minutes later), and offered 400 AUD in return for the trouble. We don't think there were too many takers as you could see everyone wanted to ride the plane.

Here's Leroy thanking his lucky stars he's not riding in THAT box! (it means he's been a good bear!)

Leroy lining up like a good bear at gate 57. As all the uncles and aunties know, suites board through one door, Lower Deck Y through another, and Upper Deck Y and J through the upward sloping one.

Here's a pic trying out the footwell for size. Mummy was in 21K and Aunty P in 22K today. 17K was available, but mummy had already tried it and didn't want it this time.

Uncle THF, tired of the foot shots yet?

An advantage the non-bulkhead seats get is the space for hand luggage under the seat in front. Very neat, and does not exist on the bulkhead seats.

Still a long way to go. Don't mind mummy's reflection in the screen. We didn't know how to get rid of her!

We pushed back about 15 minutes or so late.
Here's a pic of the typical morning crew at SYD. Lots of widebodies heading all over the world.

    The Star Alliance
(and related companies) parking lot here In this pic: TG's HS-TJR, SQ's 9V-SPI, VS's G-VFOX and UA's N105UA. Did not get the CA, nor the further UA one, as it was too far away.

It's confirmed! SQ flies to Rockdale and Wollongong! (we think)

We taxied along taxiway Alpha to make a left turn and line up for a takeoff run down runway 34L.
Here's a video of our takeoff and initial climbout. You can see we lift off just around the rwy 07/25 crossing. It's no better or worse than what the 747-400 does.

Short Video: turning onto 34L, takeoff and climbout

A brief glimpse of Sydney City. Goodbye!

Not long after, the lovely crew led by Aunty CSS Foo (she's lovely by the way) started prepping up for breakfast. SQ220 is a breakfast then lunch service. It's a lot to eat in 7 hours and 10 minutes!

      Here's the breakfast menu bit!

Starts out with a fruit plate

      We chose the sausage.

All this while, Aunty SKA has settled into a nice rhythm crossing the nullarbor.

And out of sheer boredom, Leroy is delighted to find the Christmas decorations still up!

Midway through the flight, mummy asked the nice Uncle IFS if us bears could go and take a few pics of the 12 brown chairs at the bottom of the stairs.

Aunty CSS Foo took us all down and even gave us a demo of the seat!

Here's us trying it on for size. Nice! We like!

        Trying out the table too!

Here's a pic during the Bed demo Aunty CSS Foo is giving. It's very complicated deploying for sure. Extremely fiddly.

The end result is Very comfy though!

This is about the time where mummy got really mad at us, but we couldn't help it, we were bored So we went to play in the bar area

So she asked us to watch TV, anything at all, she said. So we chose a nice selection of fine British entertainment. Here's a really happy fellow called Daffyd! We like Daffyd

And here's another fine English Gentleman, We is well improving our vocabulary listenin' to 'im talk. Restecp!

He looks a bit like a certain Kazakhstan chap, and also a Austrian Fashion Designer, but we're not sure really.

Around two hours from landing, you could see a lot of people getting up. The cabin crew set the mood lighting to a gentle hue to minimize the shock to the eyes for the waking folk.

Aunty CSS Foo and Aunty FSS Lim were our guardian angels. They were so lovely they set up a nice little lunch. Here's the menu

Nuts again! But less warm than on our trip down Do you know why aunty Phaleesy?

Prawn starter - this was Very good!

And we had the beef with noodles. A tad over peppered perhaps, but still good

Finally finishing it off with a sensational toffee icecream with chocolate sauce!

By which time, we were passing over eastern Java. Pic dedicated to Mummy's Cina-Surabaya friends

Soon we began descending into Singapore

This is as we were passing 8400ft. Notice the icing that uncle UMD was talking about in his trip report? It dissipated at 5500ft or so, but strangely it wasn't present at cruising altitude.

A not often seen view from a bored camerawoman. View looking aft. Camerawoman looking daft.

Finally landing in Singapore at 1330 - we touched down on 02L, and took a long time to vacate the runway. We then turned onto North Cross 2.

Here, looks like someone's financed road reconstruction! (OpenTTD players will know what this is )

SWJ at E20-something about to operate SQ326 to FRA

Half of SQ's Airbus fleet visible here. SKA's wing, with SGC in the foreground, SGA in the background

Finally pulling into gate F31. 9V-SLE about to push back

Waving goodbye to Aunty SKA. We luv ya

                Aunty SKA
takes Center Stage at F31 every day

This pic really gives the impression of size!

Finally, an airplane larger than the A380! Mummy kept muttering something about perspective and how it was tricking our eyes, but we were having none of it. This MAS plane WAS indeed bigger than aunty SKA!......................

                Then again, maybe not........

In short, we're getting fond of this plane. It's very nice and spacious. Today's flight being extra nice because of Aunty CSS Foo and Aunty FSS Lim (who was also on our SQ221 a few days before) who were both very very caring.

Hope you enjoyed reading it xxxxxx

                Hugs

It's spelt or pronounced a bit differently

Yes, factory made indeed. Shame their look is quite generic. In fact, leroy is instantly recognised everytime he boards an SQ plane. Same goes for Bubba in a Conrad

Didn't realise it until aunty Hayam told the bears it was the first one of the year
