  • MAN forced to take 'naked' scanners out of service

More 'airport security' nonsense. They are timed to 'go off' every four or five (depending who is telling the truth) through them anyway, meaning many people who have not triggered anything initially have to go have a naked scan anyway.

Controversial ‘naked’ body scanners are being scrapped at Manchester Airport in a red-tape wrangle set to cost more than a million pounds, the M.E.N. can reveal.

Furious bosses believe they are being forced to axe the security machines at the end of next month because European Commission chiefs have not ‘prioritised’ approving them for permanent use.

They will be switched off on October 31 – meaning the airport, which is jointly owned by Greater Manchester’s 10 town halls, will have to splash out £1.1m on new scanners and the recruitment of an extra 55 full-time security officers, who will manually frisk passengers.

Manchester is the only airport in Europe to use the ‘naked’ device, which was introduced as part of a security pilot in October 2009. New trials of the machine – which uses x-ray technology to show up hidden explosives or weapons – were dramatically halted by the European Commission last year, amid fears the machines could emit high levels of cancer-causing radiation.
