It is actually depend so much on what you want to do. I always recommend Phuket-virgin to stay in Patong area. Well at least you can shop and dine easily as you can always walk along the Beach Road and find something.

I like Burasari Resort or Ban Thai. Ban Thai is nice as it has Boots and Starbuck infront of the hotel. Holiday Inn is also nearby.

If you like more quite place, you can try Karon area or even Kata. Those high end resort will be on the North of Phuket nearby to airport.

As transportation is not easy in Phuket, personally I prefer Patong.

you can go to www.phuket.com for more info.

Don't forget to do day trip to Phi Phi Island by Speedboat!

I'd recommend avoiding the Patong area entirely for staying (a day visit is OK) for a first-timer to Phuket. It's ultra-tacky and over-commercialised, and is not reflective of some of the nicer, more secluded spots on the island, especially if the main purpose of the visit is an island getaway.

We stayed at Laguna, which is rather far from Patong, but would pick somewhere further south the next time around.

+1 for Phi Phi day trip!

Overall, I still prefer Krabi > Phuket.

Sala Phuket is nice. But it's at Mai Khao (15 mins from the airport).

If you are looking for a hideaway/ private pool/ spa/ decent F&B. They have decent tie-ups with SilkAir.

I did booked a 3 day stay through UOB Travel for abt $1500 for 2. We did a day trip to Patong.

Indeed I share this opinion, yet ask a whole bunch of Aussie's and they will tell you it is 'bloody fantastic'.

I will in that case avoid Patong - though definitely go there for a day trip. I will probably be in the area arriving on Monday and leaving on Thursday. Which places outside Patong are good then? I am willing to pay for some luxury.

I would like to take in some of the islands - Phi Phi and so on - which ones would be high on your recommended list? And how should I go about booking trip to them?
SQtraveller, if you like to avoid the "crowd", Patong is not a good choice like I said.

If I have to stay away from Patong, I will chooce Karon/Kata. Close enough to Patong, but not too busy. The problem with Karon/Kata, I do not think any place has their own private beach.

Woraburi or Movenpick may be a good choice. Never stay there before, but was there visiting friend who stayed there. Woraburi, you can have a view of the beach.

If you really want to be in high end area. I think you are looking at the nothern part of the island. I think that area called Laguna/Talang.
If budget is not an issue, why don't you look into Trisara?

As for Phi Phi tour, they will bring you around the islands. Most of the time you will be on the boat, and stop for diving, so be in your swim suite. There are many shop which will sell the package. I was told by friends there are only 2-3 operators. I did it twice and I think by 2 different company. Not much different.

Make sure it is by Speed Boat not Express Boat. You can look at this agent http://www.phuket-travel.com/speedboat/phiphi.htm. AsiaWeb is quite reputable agent in Thailand and you can book online.

I second the Mai Khao area (which is the only area I tolerate on Phuket). You'll find many luxury resorts dotting the shoreline.

Koh Phi Phi is a must do, although we kinda enjoy spending a couple of nights there to take it in at a more leisurely pace (but out favorite launch pad for a Phi Phi island trip is Krabi, not Phuket)

We really like the Cape Panwa hotel on the southern tip of the island - much quieter area but close to Cape Promthep, which is lovely. It's about 40 mins from the airport but only 10 mins from Phuket city for shopping etc.
